Republic of South Africa is a country situated in the southeast part of the Africa continent, it has shores on both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. Republic of South Africa is famous for its diversity of cultures. There are many spoken languages, and 11 of them are official, 2 of the 11 are of European origin. South Africa has 3 capitals, administrative capital (Pretoria), legislative capital (Cape Town) and judicial capital (Bloemfontein). The largest city is Johannesburg. The population of Republic of South Africa is estimated to be around 58 million people.

Economy

Republic of South Africa is the most economically developed county in Africa and among the top 20 most developed countries in the world. 40% of the industrial African production comes from the Republic of South Africa. Tourism is one of the most important sectors with regards to economy. The tourism industry generates about 7% of the GDP. In 2002 more than 6 million tourists visited Republic of South Africa. Around 3% of the people are employed in the tourism sector.

Universities

Republic of South Africa has 25 state universities and 34 private ones – all in all 59. Out of those 59 universities 9 are included in the prestigious university ranking “QS World Rankings 2019”.

The tuition fees are varying according to the different universities, but in general they start at $2250 a year and can reach up to $5600 for bachelor degree. For master degree they range from $5000 to $28 000, while PhD degrees go from $900 to $3200.

The teaching methods comprise listening to lectures and keeping notes. Despite the outdated method of lecturing, the feedback from students is very important, that is why at the end of the lectures, the lecturer takes time to talk to the students and answer their questions.

International Students – Statistics

In Republic of South Africa there are only 60 000 international students, most of them come from Europe, North America and Asia. In order to study in Republic of South Africa you might need a Student Visa, it depends on your own nationality.

If you are an international student in Republic of South Africa and you want to work, you can but only 20 hours per week. Scholarships, which partially or fully cover the tuition fee, are offered to international students. They are mainly allocated based on income.

Programmes

Universities in Republic of South Africa offer more than 990 programmes for bachelor degree, over 1150 for master degree and a bit more than 80 for PhD. The most preferred programmes are Engineering, Agriculture, Ecology, Health-related studies, etc. In most South African universities, English is the default language of instruction whilst Afrikaans as a language of higher education is increasingly coming under pressure.
