New Zealand is situated in the Southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. It comprises 2 bigger islands and many small ones. Its population is just over 5 million people, which ranks it 120th for this indicator. Its capital city is Wellington and the largest one is Auckland. There are 2 official languages – English and Maori.

Economy

New Zealand is one of the most developed countries in the word with a very well developed market economy, in which the service sector is the leader, contributing 60% of GDP. Other well-developed sectors are chemistry, metallurgy, agriculture, and international trade.

Universities

In New Zealand there are 8 state universities, which offer all educational degrees, but each specialises in certain profiles Furthermore, there are 18 technical and political institutes (TPI’s), which give out certificates and diplomas and are practically orientated. The total number of all private educational institutions is just above 600.

Higher Education in New Zealand is focused mainly on each individual student and his/hers personal desires. It is very common to organise open discussions where everyone is free to express their opinion and prove their thoughts. Teaching is also very practical orientated and the universities tend to liaise with businesses and cooperate with each other different internships and practices.

International Students

International students are calculated to be around 50 000 yearly, as the main stream comes from India and China. Each university determines its tuition fees, which differ by academic degrees. For international students bachelor fees start from $15 000, going all the way up to $27 000, whilst the master fees vary from $26 000 to $37 000. Of course there are many and different scholarships being awarded by the universities or the government. Bachelor degree students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week, while they study, and if you are studying for Master or Ph.D you can work full-time.

In order to study in New Zealand you need to get a Student Visa and a health insurance.
