81% of students in the UK are locals, 6% hail from EU countries, and 13% – from non-EU countries. The total number of international students in the UK for the 2016/2017 academic year stood at 442 375, with 42% of the students in Master’s programs hailing from non-EU countries. The number of students from China is the largest – they account for nearly 1/3 of the total number of international students. Indian students in the UK rank sank in number but their number has declined significantly since 2012-13. England has the biggest number of students hailing from non-EU countries – some 14%. Scotland, which offers grant subsidies to European students, logically has the largest number of EU students (9%). Wales has registered the biggest decline in international students since 2013-14 – 25%, Northern Ireland has also registered a decline of international students – 12%.

Business Management is the specialty most preferred by international students, with over 120 000 students opting for that program during the last year. Other popular specialties attracting large numbers of students every year are the engineering ones, social sciences, law, and design (some 150 000 students in total).
