Japan is an island country in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean, east of China, Korea and Russia. Its population was 127 million in 2015. Tokyo is the capital city and the official language is Japanese. Japan is the best developed country in Asia.

Economy

Japan’s economy is the 3rd largest in the world with a GDP of 5,16 trillion US Dollars. The best developed industries are: Agriculture 2%, Manufacturing 35% and Service Sector 63%. Japan is a member of UN, G-8, OECD and the Asia-Pacific Economy Cooperation organization. The country is a leader in manufacturing technologies and machinery.

Universities

There are more than 1200 higher education institutions in Japan, split into 3 categories- Universities, Colleges and Technical Institutes, most of them being accredited. Out of them all only 250 are state, the other 950 are private or campuses of other international universities.

All degrees are being offered, Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. The tuition fees are ranging, for Bachelor’s they start from $6500, Master’s start from $8000 and Ph.D degrees start from $8000 and can reach $16 000.

Japan is one of the few countries to offer quite a big range and opportunities for scholarships. The government provides scholarships to applying students from all over the world, they cover not only the tuition fees, but also transportation, dormitory and more.

Lecturing at Japanese universities is very practical and individual. Master’s degrees usually include research or term paper, or a combination of both. In addition to Master or Ph.D degrees, specialised certificates and diplomas are also offered.

International Students-Statistics

According to statistics from the Japanese Student Organization, during the 2018 academic year Japan had 280 000 international students which is an 11% increase from the year before, and the 5th consecutive year of rising numbers of international student. Most of the foreign students come from China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Republic of Korea, Indonesia and many more.

In order to study in Japan you need to obtain a student visa and health insurance.

Once enrolled you have the opportunity to do work-stuydy, but only if your job does NOT interfere with your studies.

Programmes

In Japan there are more than 500 programmes taught in English, split in more than 30 education fields, in over 100 universities. The most preferred programmes are: Social Studies, Business studies, Accounting, Medicine, IT, Robotics, Mechatronics and other engineering programmes are also very preferable because of the fact that the island country, Japan, is in 1st place in manufacturing and exporting technologies and machinery.
